Army and Navy first met on the football field on November 29, 1890. The series has been renewed annually since 1899, except for 1909, 1917, 1918 and 1929. It has been held at several locations throughout its history, including Baltimore and New York City but has most frequently been played in Philadelphia, since it is roughly equidistant from West Point and Annapolis. It used to be played on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving, but since 2009 the game is played on the second Saturday in December, so that it no longer conflicts with conference championship games and once again is the last non-bowl contest in college football.
From 2002 through 2015 Navy kept on winning the contest. But on December 10, 2016 Army upset Navy and won 21-17.
